about

Feathermeal is back with his sophomore LP, 'Dismissed', and he continues to confound with lush harmonies, broken rhythms, and an ability to integrate samples unlike anyone else. His first LP, 'These Demons' saw the New Orleans beatsmith take on Dante with a sonic recapitulation of his famous 'Divine Comedy', and 'Dismissed' pushes on, showing us the good, the bad, and the ugly of the human condition. The motif the album carries closest is the idea of a lullaby; the record is littereted with soft bells, emblematic of something a child would listen to to drift softly into sleep, and even at it's loudest, darkest moment, the lullaby motif is never far, providing at least a little security. The opening track 'Goth Sick' puts this to work immediately, with a soft pad opening the record, before the other instruments rip through. 'Rainbow Foam' feels like a carnival designed by David Lynch, and plunges us deeper in the rabbit hole Feathermeal has dug for us. The aplty titled 'Ceremony' shows us our first signs of consciousness, as the key change creates a sense of certainty the previous worked so hard to destroy, before 'Palm' launches us back into this world where anything could happen. 'Millions' is the soundtrack to a dark epiphany, and 'Killed Em All' follows up that epiphany with the sad misery of helplessness. The second half of the albums offer slightly more clarity, with both 'She Ghost' and "Fallen Curls' bringing familiarity into the unknown, and 'God' is painfully relevant in todays climate. The closing opus, the 8 and a half minute 'Precious Metals' brings the record to a strangly optimistic close, showing that Feathermeal, as dark and deep as he chooses to go, still believes in humanity to be human.
